WLS Surgical Associates

  November 2011
 Greetings!

Research and Innovation are the pathways to a better outcome.  WLS is constantly working on new projects for submission to the major surgical meetings in the US.

Read more below.

Sincerely,  Joseph A. Kuhn, MD

Research and Innovation:  What Dr. Kuhn loves to do in his spare time. . .

1. CLOSURE OF MESENTERIC HERNIA DEFECTS:  A BETTER WAY

We just submitted an abstract evaluating the latest technique to prevent a condition called "internal hernias".  These occur due to defects in the Mesentery (see picture below) that get created during a gastric bypass. They cause bowel obstructions or pain.

The latest technique involves a permanent circular stitch plus a special glue during surgery to close the defects.  We looked at almost 2000 cases.

The "new" technique had a 0.3% symptomatic "internal hernia" rate compared to the "old" technique with a 5-6% rate.  A BIG difference.  Unfortunately, most docs in the US don't routinely close both defects.  Therefore, this report could give good motivation to introduce a new technique to help.

2. SIMPLE TECHNIQUE FOR TROCAR SITE CLOSURE

We just submitted an abstract that shows a novel way to close the big Trocar site (incision on the left side for Bypass and Sleeve).  With this new technique in 1800 patients, we only saw hernias in 0.4%.  Much simpler, less expensive, less pain.

Dissecting Darwinism
Dr. Kuhn has an interest in Darwinism (the strengths and weaknesses)

He just got an article accepted to a medical journal about Darwinism.  He really looks forward to posting the entire article when it comes out in January.

He is ready to Debate. . . and win. More to follow.
